Ecuador — The Devil’s Nose, Departing Alusí

La Nariz del Diablo train

Our primary purpose in Alusí was not the town itself, although it was fun to photograph. Our objective on this leg was a train ride, the famous Devil’s Nose. So, let’s settle into our reserved seats and start the trip, shall we?

Aboard La Nariz del Diablo — The Devil’s Nose

As you can tell, La Nariz del Diable Tren (The Devil’s Nose Train) is a throwback to an earlier era of train travel, with the cars replete with varnished wood. The train ride covers about 7.5 miles/12 kilometers, and at the end of the run in Sibambe the train will have descended some 500 feet/150 meters. The trip takes 2½ hours, including an hour in Sibambe to stretch one’s legs, get some refreshment, and watch native people dance for the tourists.

Along the way you’ll see some spectacular scenery, such as captured in these images from our February 18, 2016 train trip:

Fun Photo Friday — Alausí Favorites

Alausí

The road into Alausí afforded some spectacular scenery:

But Alausí itself also provided me with a lot to photograph in a very short period of time. Here is a woman in colorful native Quechua dress:

The original name for the town was San Pedro Alausí, and here is San Pedro overlooking his town:

Ecuador — More on Alausí

Alausí

The town of Alausí is home to less than 6,000, but it exudes a charm that would fill a larger city. The buildings are colorful:

The food is colorful:

The train station is colorful:

The interior of the small nearby church was colorful:

Even the wares on the streets hit you with color:

I’m going to skip ahead and save the Devil’s Nose scenic railroad trip for next week. For now I’d like to mention a charming little place where we ate lunch immediately following our rail journey. This would be El Mesón del Tren (The Inn of the Train), just a few minutes walk from the train station:

Inside we were greeted with a pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff, and good food:
