Ecuador — Driving into Alausí

Welcome to Alausí, Ecuador

Thursday, February 18, 2016 proved to be a very busy one for our tour group. We left Cuenca and were due at the beautiful resort La Andaluza north of Riobamba later that afternoon. In between we would drive high up into the Andes, catch a breathtaking train, and visit the oldest mission in Ecuador, all in just one day.

The bus ride was fairly spectacular, as you can see from the photo above. What we didn’t realize just yet was that the railroad tracks you see far below in the next photograph was where we would be going later that day:

The Devil’s Nose railway tracks

But before our date with this scenic train, we would first would have to crest some high terrain, and descend to reach Alausí:

We reached Alausí with plenty of time to spare, so with almost an hour to wait for our train, Ursula and I hit the town for some quick sightseeing:

Ecuador — Cuenca; Inside the New Cathedral

New Cuenca Cathedral

Upon our return from viewing Eduardo Vega ceramics, Ecuagenera orchids, and La Casa de la Makana scarves, our tour returned us to Cuenca for our next attraction. We’ll get to that in a moment, but I thought I would share with you some Cuenca street scenes that greeted us stepping off the tour bus:

After several hours on our own, in which we and some fellow tour participants went back to Cositas 10-24 for dinner, we caught up again with the rest of the tour group for a visit inside the New Cuenca Cathedral, Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción.

As you can see, the interior is at least as impressive as the façade. Here is view after stepping inside:

At the far end is, of course, the High Altar, presented in closer detail here:

But almost as impressive, in my view, is the magnificent dome above:
