Southern Caribbean Cruising — ABC Islands; Curaçao, a Sunnier Afternoon for Better Photos

Tugs beneath Koningin Julianabrug

You may have noticed in this series on Willemstad, Curaçao that the cloudiness in the morning was far from ideal for picture taking. Fortunately, that condition did not hold throughout the day. Today’s photographs of were taken beginning at 3:55 p.m. in the afternoon, beginning with the photo above of the Koningin Julianabrug (Queen Juliana Bridge). This colossally tall bridge spans Sint Anna Bay, and reaches heights of 185 feet/56.4 meters. The rest of today’s photos will be presented in chronologic order. This next photo was taken Handelskade just feet from pedestrian pontoon Koningin Emmabrug (Queen Emma Bridge):

Looking back from this corner gets you this view:

Time to head back across the Queen Emma Bridge as we slowly make our way back to Grandeur of the Seas:

Look back and get a shot of the cafés along the Willemstad waterfront:

Reaching the west side of Sint Anna Bay, especially in the afternoon with the sun over your shoulder, expect to get a great shot of the Queen Emma wooden pedestrian pontoon bridge with the colorful Willemstad waterfront as an interesting background:

And don’t forget to capture Fort Amsterdam while you’re here:

Now we’re back at Fort Rif:

Just outside the east entrance to Fort Rif you’ll find a statue of Dr. Efraïn Jonckheer:

Heading back to the ship we once again pass Renaissance Mall:

We’ll finish up the ABC Islands on this week’s Fun Photo Friday. Until then:

Southern Caribbean Cruising — ABC Islands; Curaçao Vendors, Veggies, and Views

For a rather unique take on an outdoor produce market, head north along Willemstad’s waterfront and hang a left at Sha Caprileskade. This takes you to the “Floating Market,” most of which doesn’t really float. These vendors sail in from Venezuela, hawking everything from arts and crafts to fresh produce and spices. Want a piece of fresh fruit? I mean really fresh? Here’s where you want to go:

A look back toward Sint Anna Bay will get you a view of a very unique pedestrian draw bridge across the mouth of the Waaigat Lagoon:

From here, well past the Floating Market, we turned south, and then west on the parallel Prinsenstraat, which in turn became another pedestrian street. You just gotta love these charming backstreet businesses:

The address is 63 Prinsenstraat, but it’s actually on an unnamed pedestrian street

We turned south again until we hit Hendrikplein, then headed west again. There’re some fun sights along this route, including the impressive Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecutor), which I mistook for a church:

And just west of there, where Hendrikplein becomes Wilhelminaplein, are you hungry and hot from all this walking? If so:

Don’t forget to look up. Above Champs you’ll see some fun architecture:

With a street name like Wilhelminaplein, and a space on that street called Wilhelminapark, you would of course expect to see evidence of Queen Wilhelmina:

I’ll leave you today with a last look as we turn onto Breedestraat:

Immaculately clean streets everywhere
