Transatlantic — Continuing in Kristiansand, Norway

Kristiansand Old Town

I teased you on Monday with a photograph of the Christiansholm Fortress, which dates back to 1672. Here’s another view:

Surprisingly, this old fort was in use all the way into 1872, 200 years after it’s completion:

The city center of Kristiansand is the borough of Kvadraturen. Here you will find the Kristiansand Cathedral. with its verdigris-accented roof:

Kristiansand Cathedral is the fourth church to occupy this spot. It was built of brick and cement, and the five-year construction effort reached completion in 1885.

Now for two more views of the Kristiansand Old Town center, beginning with this closeup of the old Kristiansand Fire Station:

And lastly a photo of the Norges Bank building:

Transatlantic — Into Kristiansand, Norway

Kristiansand, Norway

The next stop after Skagen for Voyager of the Seas was Kristiansand, Norway, where we docked on August 24, 2017. Kristiansand is much larger city than our previous stop. Alas, the weather did not hold here, so I’m limited on the imagery. We’ll start below with a photograph of Christiansholm Fortress, a structure ordered built by King Christian IV and completed in 1672:

Being a seaport, it would be remiss of me not to include at least one marina shot:

There is in Kristiansand, near this marina, an event held each August. This is the annual Sand Festival, where artists from around the world come to create sand sculptures. Fortunately for us, the creations for the 2017 event were still up for view:

This is also the location of Kristiansand’s Otterdalsparken (along the Kristiansand Boardwalk) where you’ll find fountains designed by Kjell Nupen:

Also in this area is a sculpture of a boy riding atop a bear, the story behind which I cannot find:
