Circumnavigating Australia — Barossa Valley; Tanunda and Lambert Estate

Two wineries down. One to go. But before we get there, let’s stop in the town of Tanunda for some refreshment at a great place for ice cream (and coffee) — Beans and Cream:

Beans and Cream, Tanunda

Beans and Cream was, quite simply, fantastic. Very interesting gelato and sorbet flavors from which to choose. Here’s a photo of some of their selection from Steempeak (unfortunately, Beans and Cream’s website does not do them justice):

Onward, and upward. Next stop was Mengler Hill Lookout, which overlooks Barossa Valley.

Up here at the lookout are two other attractions. One is Barossa Pioneer Memorial:

The other is the Barossa Sculpture Park:

But our time here was limited. It was approaching lunch, and ice cream will only hold you over for so long. Our next stop was Lambert Estate Wines:

Lambert Estate Wines

The founder of Lambert Estate is from Wisconsin. His name is Jim Lambert, and he was very entertaining when he dropped in on us during our lunch and wine tasting. His charming wife Pam also made an appearance. Let’s take a look at just one of the many vineyards here:

We’ll be returning for another look at Lambert Estate on Wednesday before heading on to Seppeltsfield Road. But for now it’s time to dig into lunch to go with our wine tasting. And what a spread it was. Each platter, one of which is pictured below, served two people. I shared this one with the gentleman across the table from me, and Ursula shared one with his wife:

A spread for two!

Everything you see above was locally produced. Now that’s impressive! And nobody left hungry.

Circumnavigating Australia — Barossa Valley; Château Tanunda Winery

Château Tanunda estate

Next up on our Taste the Barossa tour deep in the Barossa Valley was Château Tanunda Winery, which dates back to 1890. Here, in addition to Shiraz, the varietals included Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Chardonnay, and Riesling.

Unfortunately, the grounds were more impressive than the wines. The samplings were okay, but not up to the standards of Peter Lehmann or what I’ve come to expect from other vintners from this area.

Our Château Tanunda wine tasting

It didn’t help that our server was a bit on the surly side. And woe be to anyone who whispered during one of her recitals on what we were tasting next. This may have had an adverse effect on the tasting, so perhaps the wines might fare better when sampled in another setting.

I will say that the cellar and barrels were impressive, though:

The views here were quite impressive:

The tasting area within the cellar, which was adjacent to the tasting room I displayed above, was also quite nice:

Even the bar area looked fun, or at least more fun than our experience in the separate tasting room:
