An Award Nomination for RDougWicker.com

Seems the Jenny Mac Book Blog has discovered RDougWicker.com, and that Jenny likes what she sees.  She’s nominated this blog for the One Lovely Blog Award.  I’m not sure just how legit this award is, but I’ll play along as it seems pretty innocuous (despite a web search that shows no apparent master award site).

The “rules” require me to list seven random things about myself, thank the nominator (thank you, Jenny), link back to the nominator’s blog (see the link above), and nominate fifteen other bloggers (but, in a twist, I’m not going to tell the nominees just to see if they catch on — crafty, huh!)

Seven random things about myself:

  1. I’m madly and deeply in love with my wife of 33 years
  2. I’m very much proud of my two daughters
  3. I love a good practical joke
  4. I love writing humor
  5. I hate the negativity of this year’s presidential election, and the silliness that poses as “debate” this time around
  6. I’m an avid photographer
  7. I’m a devoted traveler

Fifteen blogs I really enjoy (and am nominating for this award):

  1. Secret Spartanburg
  2. PhotoBotos
  3. Bibliophilic Blather
  4. Get the Flick
  5. Big Al’s Books and Pals
  6. Candy’s Raves (and Rants)
  7. Daily Cheap Reads
  8. Red Adept Select
  9. Going Dutch
  10. Live in the Old Lane
  11. Kissing the Blarney
  12. Cora Buhlert
  13. Two Ends of the Pen
  14. Rantings of an Amateur Chef
  15. Victor Travel Blog

The Restaurant Story — A Piece of Tasty Humor

Beware the Next Table

My good friend and fellow author Karen Wojcik Berner has decided to run another one of my humor pieces.  This time around it’s The Restaurant Story.

If you’re in need of a chuckle (or two — it’s a two-punchline story), drop on by and enjoy.

Anchorage

Anchorage is not one of Alaska’s most picturesque destinations.  For the most part, the architecture is lacking and the skyline remains unimpressive.  There are, however, a few gems out and about, and then there are those wonderful flowers which we saw on Wednesday.

One of the more interesting buildings is the 4th Avenue Theater.  Built in the Streamline Moderne style, construction began in 1941 and was finished after the war in 1947.  Unfortunately, Anchorage doesn’t seem to understand what they have here, as it has fallen into disuse.  For ideas, Anchorage should look to the exquisite renovation of El Paso’s incredible Plaza Theatre, but such projects are not cheap.  To see what can be done, take a look at the Plaza photo gallery here, and take a look inside the main theater in this photograph.

But, whereas the architecture may be lacking, there are other things to do and see, such as the highly entertaining and educational Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center.

Other sights along the streets include giant halibut, a mural painted by Robert Wyland, a local hangout called Humpy’s Alehouse, and another known as Rumrunner’s Old Towne Bar and Grill.  I’m going to save our favorite Anchorage hangout for the last in this series.  Watch for this very special review on Monday.

Meanwhile, here’s Anchorage as seen through my cameras:
