Holiday Repeat — If Edgar Allan Poe Had Written A Christmas Carol (Humor)

Be sure to catch the Mickey Spillane-inspired sequel to this tale on Christmas Day:

A Poe Christmas

Once upon a snowstorm dreary, through which I trudged all weak and weary,
Past many a quaint and curious number of advertisement lore
I saw the ad, above some wrapping; on the door I started tapping
At first it was a gentle tapping, tapping at the storefront door
I must gain entry to this store, as there was nothing then I wanted more

Searching for this and nothing more

The toy was here for which I search, leaving me in quite a lurch
Having waited far too long to shop for “The Super Fly-A-Saur”
Eagerly I watched the clerk, beckoning me not to shirk
I quickly entered, nearly berserk; “I must have it,” I said with a smirk
“Where, oh where, be that damned flying dinosaur?”

Quoth the clerk, “The second floor”

Up the escalator I ran, fighting against its downward span
I cursed its descending stairs as I glanced to the ascending flight before
Casually the clerk began her ascent, chuckling at my predicament
“I fear, sir, you shall be spent, before you reach the next department”
I ran, and ran, for far too long, fighting against this tiresome chore

Vowing “Not up the down escalator evermore”

I stopped, bent over double, breathing hard for all my trouble
Crying out with all my might, “Where is this cursed Fly-A-Saur?”
She smiled that stupid service smile, the one that sends me shaking
“Tis over here,” she said, “Right behind that great big door”
“Tis over there, I swear, or my name is not Lenore

“Tis what you seek and nothing more”

I pushed the double doors apart, what I saw gave me a start
“There’s nothing here, I’ve been tricked, where is this hellish dinosaur?”
She smirked again, mocking me, sending me quaking
I felt rage in the making, “Tis right there,” said this shrewish bore
“You see, we’re all out at this store; here’s your rain check, nothing more”

Thus I strangled the fair Lenore

Viti Levu, Fiji — First Stop Lautoku

Today I’m back to my normal Monday-Wednesday-Friday blog schedule, and I’ve returned to the topic of our Sydney-to-Seattle cruise earlier this year.  But in keeping with this week’s holiday spirit I’m also running repeats on Tuesday and Thursday of my ever-popular holiday humor tales.  Tuesday I’ll bring to you If Edgar Allan Poe had ‘Written A Christmas Carol.’  Thursday you’ll find here a repeat of the sequel to that tale with my follow-up A Spillane Christmas Carol.

Lautoka

Lautoka Sugar Mill

Our ship made two stops of the Fiji island of Viti Levu.  The first was the sugar mill town of Lautoka, also known locally as “Sugar City.”  The mill you see above was founded in 1903.

Ursula and I had been to Fiji before, but the previous time back in the 1990s we arrived into Nadi International Airport and spent most of our time at various resorts.  The research on this previous trip formed the basis for the fictional island resort of Vai Kai in my mystery novel Decisions.  But, I digress.  Nearby our dock was this island, which I believe is Vio:

Once off the ship we made our way to the massive Lautoka Market.  Here you can buy everything from fresh produce to souvenirs to local island crafts.

After the market it was time to snag a bus and head downtown.  Lautoka is a very colorful little city with many neat little shops and other sights.

Street life and people watching are also fun here.

We ended the day with a beautiful Fijian sunset as we made our way to the other side of the island:

Fun Photo Friday — Christmas Lights 2013

We’ll finish this week’s Christmas lighting celebration with a Fun Photo Friday that originally ran back in 2013:

Peace on Earth

Well, it’s time for the annual Christmas Lights blog.  This year El Paso’s San Jacinto Plaza is undergoing renovation, so the annual downtown light display was moved to the park just outside the main city library, and is comparatively subdued over years past.

Cleveland Square Park

Nevertheless, the display is still impressive.

Visitors came to gawk.  If they took chill there was hot chocolate nearby.

And if they got hungry there was the snack wagon.

But for atmosphere it’s just hard to resist converting nighttime people shots to black and white.

Christmas lights however are made to display in full color.

Abstract Light

Most of the shots taken for today’s blog were at ISO 400 to keep digital noise to a minimum.  Aperture Priority was used with aperture set to the widest possible opening.  The camera was stabilized on a carbon fiber tripod (a real must if you’re serious about photography — light, quick to set up, easy to move).  Shutter release was delayed for two seconds to avoid camera shake, and most exposures were taken at about one full second.  Some shots were taken using Hand Held Night Scene mode, in which the camera takes a series of three shots in rapid succession and then internally combines the shots into one image.  The snack wagon shot above was taken using this latter method.

For more tips (especially color balance) see my blog post from December 21, 2012:  Photographing Outdoor (and Indoor) Christmas Lights

Being a former controller, I got to taxi Santa’s sleigh out to the runway:

And then clear the Grand Old Elf for takeoff:

Here’s today’s gallery of shots.  As always, click on any image below to bring up the slideshow.
