Santiago Architecture Part 2 — Downtown “Sanhattan”
Not all the buildings in Santiago are old. There is a newer section of town that is a modern sea of glistening glass and structural steel. That’s the “Sanhattan” area of Santiago, a made-up word that combines “Santiago” and “Manhattan”, and justifiably so. The photograph above depicts the cell phone-shape of Chile’s telephone company, which at one time was the tallest structure in Santiago. Today it’s number five. The current Santiago record holder is Gran Torre Santiago (Great Santiago Tower), also known as Costanera Center Torre 2. This is a 62-story behemoth is part of the Costanera Commercial and Business complex, and houses a six-story shopping mall:
