Mediterranean Cruise 2022 — Ibiza; Portiatx Beach, then onto Sant Antoni de Portmany

Following our stop at the Punta Arabí Hippi Market we headed north, near Ibiza’s northernmost point, to Portiatx Beach. And for such a distant destination, this place appeared to be quite popular with both locals and visitors alike. The waters were clear and a beautiful blue with green undertones, as you can see in the photo above. Now let’s zoom in for a closer view before heading to the second largest city on Ibiza:

Portiatx Beach, Ibiza, Spain

The beach is not without its amenities. On the left side of the photo above is a restaurant, and the large structure in the middle appears to be either a resort or an apartment complex. But behind where I stood taking the photo above is the town of Portiatx, where we found restaurants, cafés, a souvenir shop, and even a supermarket. We spent perhaps half an hour at this location, enjoying the views, getting refreshments, and visiting the loo. Then, it was back on the tour bus for a relatively short drive to our next destination and Ibiza’s second largest city, Sant Antoni de Portmany (Spanish: San Antonio Abad). Behold The Egg (Monument al Descobriment d’Amèrica — Monument to the Discovery of America):

The Egg — model of Christopher Columbus’s Santa María contained within

If you’re wondering from the caption above what connects Christopher Columbus to Ibiza, it’s the local claim that he originated from this island. But that’s only a claim, as most historians peg him as coming from Genoa, Italy. South of The Egg is a harbor and marina, where you’ll find tour guides, boat cruisers, and dive vendors hawking their services:

Time for refreshment? If so, you’ll find that at the east end of this walkway, along with other venues:

Of course, no visit to a marina is complete without the obligatory boat shots:

Mediterranean Cruise 2022 — Ibiza; Punta Arabí Hippie Market

Ibiza has several famous outdoor “Hippie Markets,” and the most famous of these is the Punta Arabí Hippie Market. It’s also the original, dating back to 1973, and the largest, with over 500 venders. As luck would have it, Punta Arabí Hippie Market is only open on Wednesdays. So, what are the chances Ursula and I would be on Ibiza on a Wednesday, specifically the 18th of May 2022?

If you’re into arts, crafts, handmade clothing, hand-woven baskets and mats, leather goods, and whatnot, then this place may be for you. It was positively teeming with both vendors and shoppers.

But it’s not all shopping-’til-you’re-dropping here. You can also find shade, food, refreshment’s, and even a little musical entertainment as you wander through the stalls:

But I have to be honest with you. While this would be a great place to stop for under, say, half an hour or so, our tour spent far longer than necessary. That wasn’t just our opinion, but rather the consensus of most of our tour group.

Am I glad I saw this famous, iconic Hippie Market? Yes, but it did get a bit repetitive after a while.

If you’re in the area on a Wednesday between May and August, then by all means drop on by and give it a shot.

Just don’t expect the Punta Arabí Hippie Market to hold your interest if your tour drops you off here for well over an hour and a half.

This week’s Fun Photo Friday will be the first of three featuring Ibiza favorites. Next Monday we move on to Portiatx Beach and the town of Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza’s second largest town. Until then:
