Circumnavigating New Zealand — Heading Back Through Taieri Gorge

A road along the way

By now you’re familiar with Taieri Gorge, Taieri River, and Dunedin Railways, so today I’ll let the photographs do the talking. Click on any image below to enlarge and to bring up today’s gallery slide show:

Circumnavigating New Zealand — Leaving Pukerangi Railway Station

Pukerangi

We alighted from the train at the quaint stop of Pukerangi. Here the locals set up tables from which to sell their various crafts and wares as we waited for the train crew to reposition the locomotive for the return trip to Dunedin. After perhaps 45 minutes or so of using the outhouse and looking around, our Dunedin Railways train was ready for reboarding. So, I snapped a few shots more, and Ursula and I then climbed back onto the train.

This time I was determined to secure a spot between passenger cars so that I could obtain better shots of Taieri Gorge on the way back. I hate trying to photograph from behind a glass window, as controlling reflection is impossible.

Taieri Gorge and Taieri River

So, I parked latched onto a spot and hung on. On the way back I managed several shots of Taieri River:

But even more impressive were the rolling hills and varied colors of the surrounding vegetation:

This platform between passenger cars was also a good vantage from which to photograph our train as it rounded bends and headed over trestles:

We’ll view more of the gorge on Wednesday. But until then, I’ll leave you today with these two additional shots:

Circumnavigating New Zealand — Traversing Taieri Gorge

Maniototo at Puderangi

Time to head back from the Maniototo plateau and plain, through the Taieri Gorge, for return to Dunedin. And on this return trip you’ll see much more of Taieri Gorge than on Monday’s article.

Taieri Gorge

The Taieri Gorge was formed by the Taieri River, a little of which you can see here:

Our ride was of course aboard the Taieri Gorge Limited, which is a line run by Dunedin Railways:

Along the way we had some fun crossing tall train trestles:

Now let’s enjoy some of the views if this wondrous, rugged terrain:
