Jewel of the Seas — Dover; Dover Museum and a Bronze Age Boat

Ground Floor, Dover Museum —  Archaeology Gallery

In Market Square, bound by North Downs Way and Cannon Street, is the Dover Museum. The main attraction here is on the second floor, or third floor if you’re one of us yanks since the first floor is the one above the ground floor here in the U.K. The ground floor contains the Archaeology Gallery, and it’s here you’ll find stuff such as a wooden bucket dating back to the 6th century:

Head on up to the first floor for the Temporary Exhibition Gallery. On this day the “temporary” exhibit had a decidedly military theme with no specific era in mind:

But it’s not all military on this floor. Other services are featured as well, including fire, police, and maritime.

Port Pilot (not “porch pirate”) Boat

Okay, time to head on up to the second (third for us yanks) floor and take a gander of this Bronze Age Boat, but before we do:

Now on to the main attraction, Dover’s Bronze Age Boat:

As you can see from the placard below, this remarkably preserved boat dates back to around 1550. It was found in 1992:

And here she is:

In an effort to determine how this boat was put together, archaeologists decided to recreate a portion of it. The result is on display in this next photograph:

This Fun Photo Friday will be the first of two featuring Dover favorites. Next week we head over for a closer look at St. Mary’s Church and the Dover Western Height fortress.

Jewel of the Seas — Arriving to Dover

The White Cliffs of Dover

As you may recall, this is the second of three back-to-backs aboard Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas, which in turn was the fourth voyage taken this trip in 2022 starting with a transatlantic crossing aboard Vision of the Seas followed by a Mediterranean cruise aboard the same ship. Interspersed between those voyages were trips to Limburg an der Lahn, Germany, and Utrecht, Netherlands. We’re now approaching the end of this voyage, which was followed up with a cruise to…. Well, we’ll get to that beginning Monday, 14 August. For this week and next I’ll be showing you our final destination before heading back to Amsterdam for our third Jewel voyage — Dover, England.

Dover Castle

Unfortunately, the skies did not cooperate on the sail into port. The was overcast and gray. Nevertheless, I was determined to get some shots during the approach:

Setting out on foot, Ursula and I made our way into town. And one of the first sights greeting us was St. Mary’s Church on North Downs Way:

After that we hit Castle Street where, at the northeast end of the street, we saw Dover Castle in the distance:

A right turn northwest bound on Cannon Street gave us these charming village views:

There’s no escaping Subway, even on Cannon Street in Dover
Ask not for whom the bells toll… all eight of them

Now, let’s finish today with a great view of St. Mary’s Church as seen from Dover Western Heights:

On Wednesday I’ll show you the Dover Museum and a Bronze Age boat
