Port 9 Papeete — Sailing out of Nanuu Bay

Papeete

On November 5, 2015, the Crown Princess left our last port of call for the long voyage back to Los Angeles.  The time of day was perfect, not only for the front-lighted views of Papeete and Nanuu Bay, but also for the magnificent sunset you’ll see on Wednesday, and again on Friday.

Yachts of Nanuu Bay

Nanuu Bay’s marina offered up some really fun yachts to photograph, and the angle of the sun left shimmering reflections on those yachts dancing upon the water:

Looking back into town we could see the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Papeete, and later the Protestant Church of Papeete:

We also sailed past Pā’ōfa’i Gardens, as well as that colorful Pā’ōfa’i Gardens-based outrigger rental business featured last week in some photo:

Also on display in the cooling afternoon breeze were people paddling about in outriggers:

We’ll continue our sail away on Wednesday, but until then here is today’s photo gallery and slide show:

Port 9 Papeete — Around town and the Marché de Papeete

Papeete Mairie (City Hall) — Modeled after the Royal Palace

Walking the streets of Papeete affords the photographer with much to capture.  The image above in the Mairie, or City Hall, and it was modeled after the old Royal Palace, which was demolished back in the 1960s.  Here’s a close-up of the tiled roof, cupola, and colonial-style dormers:

There were some pretty interesting automobiles about, as well.  Here’s a car barely larger than the diminutive scooter parked alongside it:

The Notre-Dame Cathedral of Papeete is a surprisingly small yet charming building not far from the cruise ship dock:

The streets of Papeete offer some colorful street art:

There’s some interesting street photography for the taking, such as this outdoor café:

I’ll end today’s tour of Papeete with a look at the Marché de Papeete (Municipal Market).  It doesn’t look like much on the outside, but don’t be deceived:

Marché de Papeete

Inside you’ll find a massive, two-story marketplace filled with fruit, vegetables, fish and meats, and stalls offering everything from hats and clothes to leather purses and jewelry.  There are also places to kick back and enjoy a drink or a light meal, as well.
