Ibiza has several famous outdoor “Hippie Markets,” and the most famous of these is the Punta Arabí Hippie Market. It’s also the original, dating back to 1973, and the largest, with over 500 venders. As luck would have it, Punta Arabí Hippie Market is only open on Wednesdays. So, what are the chances Ursula and I would be on Ibiza on a Wednesday, specifically the 18th of May 2022?
If you’re into arts, crafts, handmade clothing, hand-woven baskets and mats, leather goods, and whatnot, then this place may be for you. It was positively teeming with both vendors and shoppers.
But it’s not all shopping-’til-you’re-dropping here. You can also find shade, food, refreshment’s, and even a little musical entertainment as you wander through the stalls:
But I have to be honest with you. While this would be a great place to stop for under, say, half an hour or so, our tour spent far longer than necessary. That wasn’t just our opinion, but rather the consensus of most of our tour group.
Am I glad I saw this famous, iconic Hippie Market? Yes, but it did get a bit repetitive after a while.
If you’re in the area on a Wednesday between May and August, then by all means drop on by and give it a shot.
Just don’t expect the Punta Arabí Hippie Market to hold your interest if your tour drops you off here for well over an hour and a half.
This week’s Fun Photo Friday will be the first of three featuring Ibiza favorites. Next Monday we move on to Portiatx Beach and the town of Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza’s second largest town. Until then:

Our next destination aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Vision of the Seas was the Spanish port of Eivissa (town of Ibiza) on the island of Ibiza. In case you’ve lost track, Ibiza would be our nineteenth day aboard Vision, including the preceding transatlantic cruise. This also represents the nineteenth day of a 68-day journey, excluding travel to our port of origination and the day of return travel. So, as you can see, we have quite a ways to go on this travel series.
As is often the case with Ursula, she had us booked on a tour of the island since our previous trips to Ibiza never saw us leave the port city. Our first tour destination on this glorious Wednesday, 18 May 2022 was the resort town of Santa Eulalia del Río, or in Catalan, Santa Eulària des Riu.
Santa Eulalia del Río is the third largest town on Ibiza, and it is the only town on the island that has running through it a stream, Riu de Santa Eulalia, flowing into the Mediterranean. As you can see, however, it’s the beach that appears to be the main draw:
As with many beach resort towns, Santa Eulalia del Río also has a boardwalk of sorts:
Of course, this wouldn’t be Europe without the outdoor dining option:
Did you know that Ibiza has its own native dog breed? It’s the Ibizan Podenco (Ibizan Hound), and it was originally bred to hunt small game, such as rabbits. On the boardwalk, just west of the southern end of Passeig de s’Alamera, you’ll find this playfully rambunctious Ibizan Podenco family:
Now let us leave the boardwalk and head north along Passeig de s’Alamera. Here, just past the correos (post office) you’ll find:
At the north end of this street you’ll find the Santa Eulalia del Río Town Hall:
On Wednesday it’s time to move on to Ibiza’s famous Hippie Market. So, until then.
