Abu Dhabi — Qasr Al Watan Palace Part 5

Qasr Al Watan Palace

Today and Wednesday I’m going to show you the west “working” wing of Qasr Al Watan Palace. Wednesday will be devoted mostly to the room housing presidential gifts, but today we’ll complete our tour of the hallway north of the Great Hall, then head into the west wing to view the Presidential Banquet Hall (informational link below). Let us begin with that hallway just north of the Great Hall:

As we made our way around to the west wing, we were continually rewarded with yet more spectacular views of the Great Hall from vantages we had not yet seen:

The interesting thing about taking this route is that you’ll discover wonderfully adorned walls with intricate designs framing the Great Hall for your photographs:

Turn into the west wing and you’ll soon arrive at the Presidential Banquet Hall on the right side (Item 5 on the diagram below).

The banquet hall has hosted many foreign dignitaries. But it is also used for iftar (informational link below). Iftar is something I had to research several years ago, when I invited for dinner a Lebanese American friend and his wife during Ramadan, as I didn’t want to place either in an uncomfortable situation. During Ramadan, Muslims fast daily from the suhur meal before dawn, and do not eat or drink again until after sunset. This second meal is the iftar. So, I had to not only plan our multicourse meal around Muslim dietary restrictions, but I had to ensure the first course wasn’t served until just after sunset.

My planning must’ve been a success, because afterward my friend told me that I knew more about his religion than he did. That was certainly a pleasing compliment.

The two photos above do not adequately convey the immense size of the banquet hall. And, unfortunately, the entrances into the hall were cordoned off, so I had to photograph from outside the room peering in. Nevertheless, I did manage a panoramic that might give you just a hint at the scale in this room:

Stepping away from the banquet hall, make sure you look up. As with the east wing, the west wing ceiling is also a beautiful sight:

On Wednesday I’ll take you inside the Presidential Gifts area. Prepare yourself for some hugely impressive treasures. Until then, and this week’s Fun Photo Friday, I’ll leave you with this outside palace view of Abu Dhabi:

Abu Dhabi — Qasr Al Watan Palace Part 3

Qasr Al Watan Palace — view of the Great Hall from the east wing

Today we hang a right at the Great Hall and head into the east wing, although the Great Hall is so stunning that many of today’s photos will peering back into that area. I hope it doesn’t get too monotonous for you. Let’s start with a review of the layout of Qasr Al Watan Palace to help you get your bearings:

Qasr Al Watan Palace layout

The Great Hall is represented above by the number 2. The east wing is to the right and contains points of interest 6, 7, and 8. We’ll be looking at these today and Wednesday. But before you get there, you’ll pass by area 1, “A Memory From The Palace.” This area contains the palace’s media room. You can also have taken here a photographic “memory” of yourself, which you will then be able to purchase as you exit.

Leaving this area behind and heading into the east wing, make sure to look back for some stunning views of the Great Hall:

The ceilings in the Great Hall (information link below) are so tall that I had to orient my camera into portrait mode and utilize my most extreme wide angle setting to record a full appreciation of the immense height:

Great Hall — Qasr Al Watan

I don’t know how tall the flat portion of the ceiling is, but that dome in the center rises to 197 feet/60 meters. And although it looks quite small in these photos because of the gargantuan scale of the hall, at 121 feet/37 meters across there is nothing small about it. In this next image of the dome, you can see a smaller dome at the top of the image. There are four of these smaller Great Hall domes, with each anchoring a corner of the ceiling.

As you walk into the east wing, you’ll see an impressively large circular metal sculpture. Here, for a price, you can step inside and pay to have a photograph taken.

While the ceiling above the Great Hall is impressive, that doesn’t mean you should skip looking overhead in the side wings:

On Wednesday we’ll continue deeper into the east wing to witness some of the cultural treasures residing there.
