54 Days at Sea — Valletta sights and the Carmelite Basilica

Another church of note here in Valletta, Malta, is the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This church was built around the same time as St. John’s Co-Cathedral.

This domed minor basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage site, but it’s not the original church. Because of severe damage during WWII, this Carmelite church was rebuilt beginning in 1958 and completed in 1981.

Inside the church you’ll find this wonderfully decorate statue of the Madonna and Child:

The most impressive architectural feature is the large, oval dome above:

54 Days at Sea — Malta; St. John’s Co-Cathedral

Saint John’s Co-Cathedral

In Valletta, the capital of Malta, is St. John’s Co-Cathedral. This co-cathedral was built by the Order of St. John (Knights Hospitaller) over a five-year period ending in 1577.

You may know the Malta branch of Knights Hospitaller under different names — Knights of Malta. This was one fascinating group. For more information, read History of Malta under the Order of St. John.

While the exterior is rather plain and dull, so much so that I failed to even photograph it, the interior is positively stunning:
