Norwegian Epic — Tenerife; Teide National Park

Mount Teide volcano

The mountain you see above is Mount Teide, an active and potentially very dangerous stratovolcano that towers 12,198 feet/3,718 meters over the island of Tenerife. Mount Teide is situated within the Teide National Park, located near the center if the widest section of Tenerife.

Teide National Park

Most of the photos you’ll see today were taken at a vantage point overlooking an ancient lava field and crater within the park.

Near the vantage point inside the ancient lava field you can see a large, towering feature. This is La Catedral (The Cathedral). La Catedral is the remnants of a magma column once contained within a rising volcano. The slopes of the volcano have long sine eroded away, leaving behind the lava conduit you see on the right side of this image:

Here is a closeup view of this conduit:

The surrounding area has an other-worldly appearance, and I wound up taking a lot of photos here. Below it today’s photo gallery. Click on any image to enlarge and activate the slide show:

Norwegian Epic — Tenerife; La Orotava

La Orotava, Tenerife

The first port of call for the Norwegian Epic following our departure from Barcelona was Santa Cruz on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. As many of my blog followers may already know, I’m a former air traffic controller, and I still teach air traffic control at the local FAA Airport Traffic Control Tower (ATCT)/Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON). When you mention Tenerife to a controller of my generation, the worst aviation disaster in history comes to mind. Fortunately, we were here for other reasons than to relive that horrible experience.

Ursula and I wouldn’t be spending much time in Santa Cruz this trip, however. We had a tour planned, a tour that would take us to a national park (more this Wednesday). But on the return back to Santa Cruz our tour made a stop at the charming and picturesque town of La Orotava. Among the many sights here is the domed Baroque-style Church of Our Lady of the Conception (Nuestra Señora de la Concepción):

Another stop is the House of the Balconies (Casa de los Balcones):

Fun Photo Friday — Clues to the Cruise

Near the Port from which We'll Embark

Near the Port from which We’ll Embark

Welcome to today’s hint-filled Fun Photo Friday.  Today I present a preview of just some of the sights I hope to bring to you over the course of the next month.  Originally we were supposed to meet the ship at the port serving the city pictured below, but we backed it up a week:

A Visit to an Ancient City

But before we get there, we’ll be revisiting this charming fishing village:

Shortly before entering the Atlantic we’ll visit this city for the third time (and the inside of this cathedral for the first time):

Does This Look Gaudy? Or is that Gaudi?

Let’s hope our passage through the Pillars of Hercules is less trying than this crossing was:

Our last stop before crossing the wide, deep pond will be:
