Kampong Gelam (Kampong Glam) and the Masjid Sultan Mosque

Most of the photos taken in this this week’s and next’s subseries of articles were in Singapore’s Chinatown, Little India, and Arab Street in the Kampong Gelam (also called Kampong Glam) area. Today’s article in particular focuses on the Muslim section of Kampong Gelam, with particular emphasis on the Masjid Sultan Mosque.

Masjid Sultan Mosque

The original mosque on this site dates to 1824, but the structure you see today began life one hundred years later. Construction began in 1924 and was completed in 1932.

Take What You Need; Give What You Can

This week and next I will present the various ethnic neighborhoods of Singapore and give you a glimpse of the various street scenes that await you in this vibrant and colorful city. Most of the photos taken in this next subseries of articles were in Chinatown, Little India, and Arab Street in the Kampong Gelam (also called Kampong Glam) area. This will lead to some colorful images in this week’s and next’s Fun Photo Friday, as well. Before I present today’s series of photos I’d like to briefly describe what you’re seeing in today’s lead image. A shopping cart was cut in half, and the two sides were attached to the wall. The you girl and boy were painted on the wall. The words on the sides of the cart are painted upon pieces of plexiglass mounted over the metal rods of the cart halves.
