Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Ålesund — Strolling from Aspøya back onto Nørvøya

Aspøy Skole (school), Aspøy

Rather than give a lengthy description of our route on foot today, I will instead let these photos pretty much speak for themselves. The city of Ålesund stretches over seven islands, but on this visit Ursula and I toured by foot on the two main islands — Aspøy to the west of the Ålesund Canal, and Nørvøya to the east. As you saw in last week’s articles, we walked between the two by traversing the Hellebroa Bridge. So, today, my descriptions will be brief as we take in the sights on both islands. Most of today’s sights will be identified in the photo captions.

Skårungen (The Fisher Boy), Aspøy side of the Ålesund Canal
Fast food kiosk east of the Hellebroa Bridge on Nørvøya
Rønneberg building, Nørvøya, Skanesgata at Notenesgata
Apotek (pharmacy), Korsegata, Nørvøya
Søster og Bror (Sister and Brother) on St. Olvas Plass, Nørvøya
Rooftops, Nørvøya, Ålesund
Kongens Gate (pedestrian street), Nørvøya, Ålesund

Løvenvold Theater, Ålesund, Norway

With the exception of the above image, today’s collection of Ålesund Fun Photo Friday favorites will concentrate on statuary:

Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Ålesund — Ålesundet to Ålesundet Kirke

In Monday’s article I gave you a brief glimpse of Ålesund, with most of that collection of photos being taken on or east of the Hellebroa Bridge spanning across the Ålesund Canal. Today I’m going to show you the sights when strolling from the Hellebroa Bridge westbound to the Ålesund Kirke (Ålesund Church). Looking at the map below, we begin at the red position pin near the center and head toward the smaller red position pin toward the left edge:

The Hellebroa Bridge will give you a lot of tranquil boat scenes:…

Ålesundet Canal

… and many wonderful buildings:

This image snagged north of Hellebroa Bridge on Brunholmgata

We’re now on the route heading southwest from Brunholmgata and onto Kirkegata.

I love old European roofs and turrets

On Kirkegata and Langberggata you find more colorful architecture:

Ursula and I approached the church by leaving Kirkegata and turning north onto Prestegata. Here you’ll find the grounds of Ålesund Kirke (Ålesund Church), on which sits this World War II memorial:

De Falne Till Minne (Memory of the fallen) 1940 to 1945

And now the Ålesund Church façade:

Trivia Time: What’s the difference between a cemetery and a graveyard?

Ålesund Church Graveyard

Answer: While both are burial grounds, and the terms are often used interchangeably, a graveyard is generally associated with the grounds of a church and a cemetery is a burial site not associated with church grounds.

Time to head back down toward Kirkegata for a continuation of our foot tour of Ålesund, Norway:
