Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Ålesund — Setting out on Foot

Still getting our Ålesund bearings

As we prepared to step back inside Jewel of the Seas and head down to the gangway, I managed a couple more shots of the town before we headed out on foot. The image you see below was taken only ten minutes before we were out on the streets and headed into town. Over this and the next two weeks I will present the photos from that excursion.

One of the first places we strolled past was the Ålesund Rådhus (Town Hall) on Keiser Wilhelms Gate:

The pictures you see below were taken on the way to the town hall plaza. This is the impressive stone structure housing Radio Ålesund, and it is located on Lorkenesgata just southwest of that plaza:

Once you’ve reached the town hall plaza, look east to find what appears to be the old post office for Ålesund, but which today is a health clinic:

Above the door reads “Post 1929”

In the plaza is a memorial to Operation Gunnerside, a sabotage of German heavy water production and Operation Fieldfare.

Another sight on the plaza is a fountain with an interesting statue:

Heading north from the plaza, on the northeast corner of Notenesgata at Skansegata, is a repurposed warehouse dating back to 1907, the Rønnebergbua:

The R & S on the side references Carl Esaias Rønneberg & Sønner (Sønner is German for Sons). 1845 would be the date the Rønneberg company changed its name to Carl Esaias Rønneberg & Sønner, and 1907 dates the building’s construction date:

Next week we’ll continue with this foot tour of Ålesund, and this week’s Fun Photo Friday will highlight the first of three presentations of Ålesund favorites.

Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Arriving Ålesund

Ålesund, Norway

Jewel of the Seas left Honningsvåg on 25 June 2022 and headed south. Two days later we settled into the Norwegian port of Ålesund. Whereas Honningsvåg is north of the Arctic Circle, our next destination placed us south of that region. And, as is usually the case, Ursula and I stood out on deck to get our bearings before venturing into town. This visit would be unguided and on foot. That means I’m not gong to have a lot of text over the next three weeks of articles, but I certainly do have a lot of photos to share with you.

Ålesund as seen from Jewel of the Seas

Even before setting out onto land, Ålesund offers a lot to see. As an example, even the Aspøy primary school looks impressive:

Aspøy Skole

Even though the school is not physically located on the island of Aspøy, the island itself is considered part of the Ålesund municipality. A bridge even connect Aspøy to Ålesund, and the island is quite visible from the cruise port:

Back on the other side of the ship you’ll find the harbor:

On Wednesday I’ll take you on a photographic foot tour of our journey into Ålesund. As for today, I’ll end with a photo series highlighting the unique roofline of this charming town:
