Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Ålesund — Ålesundet to Ålesundet Kirke

In Monday’s article I gave you a brief glimpse of Ålesund, with most of that collection of photos being taken on or east of the Hellebroa Bridge spanning across the Ålesund Canal. Today I’m going to show you the sights when strolling from the Hellebroa Bridge westbound to the Ålesund Kirke (Ålesund Church). Looking at the map below, we begin at the red position pin near the center and head toward the smaller red position pin toward the left edge:

The Hellebroa Bridge will give you a lot of tranquil boat scenes:…

… and many wonderful buildings:

We’re now on the route heading southwest from Brunholmgata and onto Kirkegata.

I love old European roofs and turrets

On Kirkegata and Langberggata you find more colorful architecture:

Ursula and I approached the church by leaving Kirkegata and turning north onto Prestegata. Here you’ll find the grounds of Ålesund Kirke (Ålesund Church), on which sits this World War II memorial:

And now the Ålesund Church façade:

Trivia Time: What’s the difference between a cemetery and a graveyard?

Ålesund Church Graveyard

Answer: While both are burial grounds, and the terms are often used interchangeably, a graveyard is generally associated with the grounds of a church and a cemetery is a burial site not associated with church grounds.

Time to head back down toward Kirkegata for a continuation of our foot tour of Ålesund, Norway:

Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Ålesund — Overlooking the Ålesundet

Joachim Rønneberg Memorial

Ålesundet is a narrow inlet that separates the two islands upon which Ålesund is situated. The east side, where Jewel of the Seas moored and where last week’s articles were centered, is on Nørvøya. Cross a short bridge and you’ll find yourself in west Ålesund, which is on Aspøya. Today I’m going to share with you the sights that await you in this small, easily walked area. To see precisely what area this is, here’s a map:

Aspøya island (left); Nørvøya island (right); Ålesundet (the canal separating the two)

And now that I’ve pinpointed the area for you, and considering that we’re in a very confined location for today’s photos, I’ll just post a photo gallery/slide show for you to peruse:
