The Basilica del Voto Nacional may be very imposing, but there is yet another important and impressive Catholic church in Quito. This is Catedral Metropolitana de Quito from which our group later that day would watch the Changing of the Guard. In the picture below you can see the elevated walkway that afforded us such a great view of the palace and the changing of the guard. We stood to the right of the steps leading into the cathedral.
The green tiled domes atop the cathedral is visible throughout much of the city, and easily picked out by eye from El Panecillo to the southwest.
While the exterior may not be quite as ornate as that of the Basilica, take a look at what awaits you inside beginning with the decorative ceiling.
And on to the intricate altar.

Quito is home to the largest neo-Gothic basilica in the New World. It’s called the Basilica del Voto Nacional, which translates to Basilica of the National Vow. As you can see, it’s quite an impressive structure sitting atop a hill in central Quito.
