Malaysia — George Town; Hitting Armenian Street and Chew Jetty

Armenian Street, George Town, Penang Island, Malaysia

When I left you last week, I was about to show you Armenian Street (Gat Lebuh Armenian), George Town, on Penang Island, Malaysia. Today we’re going to continue that tour, then stroll out onto Chew Jetty, the largest and most famous of George Town’s clan jetties. But before we discuss Chew Jetty, let’s concentrate for no on what makes Armenian Street worth a visit. For one thing, Armenian Street lies deep within the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. For another, Armenian Street greets you with lots of quaint shops, lively restaurants, and some really cool architectural details:

Seemingly everyone gets in on the act by decorating their places of business:

The gentle curve of the street helps frame shots nicely:

Don’t forget to look up as well for vibrant color and whimsical fun:

But perhaps the most famous sights on Armenian Street is the street art. And the most famous example of this street art is a 2012 piece by Lithuanian born, London trained artist Ernest Zacharevic, and his work here is titled Little Children on a Bicycle.

Continuing east southeast on Armenian Street eventually leads you to the largest and most famous of George Town’s famed Chinese Clan Jetties — the Chew Jetty. Chew Jetty was founded as a small fishing village by the Chew family, who still reside there, but it has grown to become a collection of small shops, homes, and other businesses that have their own charm. The Chew family even have their own Chew Jetty Temple:

But remember, Chew Jetty started out as a fishing village and it still retains some of that originating flavor:

(ba-dum… ba-dum… ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum) “Sh… sh… sh… SHARK!”

As you walk along the jetty, take a look across the water to the Lim Jetty and the Malayan Railway Clock Tower (Wisma Kastam) beyond:

When you get out to the end of the Chew Jetty, face southwest for a view of the colorful Hean Boo Thean Kuan Yin Temple:

On Wednesday I’ll show you another George Town sight — Pinang Peranakan Mansion, a.k.a., George Town Mansion.

Fun Photo Friday — Tenerife and La Laguna Favorites 3

La Concepción

This week’s Fun Photo Friday not only concludes our journey to Tenerife, but also that six-week long journey I’ve been presenting to you for the better part of the last year. I hope you’ve enjoyed the many sights ranging from Romania, to Egypt, to Africa. A hint as to what’s coming up in the near future: We just completed another six-week journey, and before that we travelled extensively in Southeast Asia with several weeks spent in India. But before I get to those, I may have to throw a bone to my firearms fans and do some much anticipated gun reviews. I’ll let you know how I decide to proceed soon. Right now I’m leaning toward a black & white series on a particularly interesting ghost town we recently visited. So my options. Decisions, decisions. Until next week, here are today’s Fun Photo Friday selections:

Canary Islands — Tenerife; Walking San Cristóbal de La Laguna

Iglesia de la Concepción (Church of the Immaculate Conception)

Time for a European-style pasty break, and Ursula found us a wonderful little stop. We were accompanied on this little excursion by my bridge partner aboard NCL Dawn, so we had a three-way share of delights. If you’re going to pin me down as to the particular pastry shop, I’ll tell you that I believe it was Café Palmelita (Google rating 4.2 out of 6,117 reviews). I’ll begin by showing you the display case of goodies that awaited us:

Here we had some great pastries:

And wonderful coffee:

After that it was time to hit the streets of the old section of San Cristobal de La Laguna:
