Cape Town — Wine Tour: Blaauwklippen Wine Estate

Blaauwklippen Wine Estate, Stellenbosch, South Africa

We’ve left the Paarl Wine Region behind and today I’m taking you into the Stellenbosch Wine Region for our last wine tasting of this 8 March 2025 tour — the Blaauwklippen Wine Estate. But before I get to the main review, I’m first going to show you something we visited before this tasting. Below is the entrance to the Drakenstein Correctional Centre, a low-security prison located Paarl and Franschhoek. So, why am I posting about this? Well, Drakenstein, back when it was known as Victor Verster Prison, was the final incarceration facility of a very famous Nobel Prize winner. On 11 February 1992, this man walked down the long, tree-lined pathway you see below, and then out the gate:

Monday of last week I told you that the wines at the Rhebokskloof Wine Estate were passable, but the house-made chocolates were superb. Last Wednesday I revealed that Vrede en Lust had, by far, the most consistently good selection of wines, as well as an incredible burger. Today, I’m sorry to report, we finish with the least favorite winery of the tour —Blaauwklippen Wine Estate. And that’s not just me talking. Ursula agreed, as did several of our table mates. If I were inclined to purchase any wines on this tour, this would not be the vintner I would choose. Even the presentation of the snacks left a lot to be desired:

Pretty pathetic looking, eh?

Since I don’t have a lot of good to say about this venue, I’ll just leave you with some images of our visit here:

Cape Town — Wine Tour: Sights Between Wineries

“I got a monkey on my back”

Our winery tour left the Paarl area behind, and a short time later we found ourselves on a brief, quick walking tour of Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch is about 30 minutes south of Paarl, and is located approximately 31 miles/50 kilometers east of Cape Town. Like the Paarl region, and Stellenbosch wine region is a subset of a wine growing area collectively known as the Western Cape Wine Region.

Leaving Paarl for Stellenbosch

It was a quick tour, and we didn’t have a lot of time to stop for photographs. Nevertheless, I did snag one photo of the famous Moederkerk (Mother Church):

After that, it was a run past the Stephen Rautenbach gallery (44 Church Street), which gave me these images:

After that it was back on the bus for a brief bus ride south to the Blaauwklippen Wine Estate. Reaching the estate and heading toward the entrance, you’ll past some more statuary:

I’ll be reviewing this winery in Wednesday’s article. But before I leave you, I want to present a final image taken earlier in the day. There is a small town southeast of Paarl, east of Stellenbosch, with a decidedly French vibe. And there’s a reason for that. Huguenots fleeing France, after Protestantism was all but banned by King Louis XIV, landed the Cape of Good Hope in 1688. These refugees were granted the Franschhoek Valley to settle. That community went on to establish the town of Franschhoek. In Franschhoek is a Huguenot Memoria and Museum. This the the Huguenot Memorial:

Fun Photo Friday — Cape Town, South Africa Favorites 1

Look carefully — A lot of people didn’t see it

The photo above is a bit of an optical illusion, especially when viewing it in person rather than in a photograph. Many in our tour had trouble making out the subject. Initially it looks like a map of South Africa with something overlayed. But after some coaching, squinting, employing peripheral vision, and other tricks, the image of Nelson Mandela becomes apparent. Welcome to today’s first of several Fun Photo Fridays of Cape Town favorites:
