Cairo — Grand Egyptian Museum Part 1

The new Grand Egyptian Museum

Over the next three weeks beginning today, and excluding my weekly Fun Photo Fridays, I’m going to be presenting a new Cairo destination. I’ll also be taking a break from my usual narrative and concentrating on images of the treasures contained within. So, if the introductory paragraphs appear repetitive over the next five articles (again, excluding Fun Photo Fridays), that’s intentional. But don’t fret. The pictures shall be different. As for today, there will be text as I introduce to you the largest archeological museum on the planet.

What you’ll be seeing is something that isn’t even technically open as of this writing, as it’s grand opening keeps getting pushed back. But what you’re seeing is the new Grand Egyptian Museum (also called the Giza Museum), which Ursula and I visited on 24 February 2025, after its soft opening on 16 October 2024. The most recent “official” opening date was 6 July, that it was recently announced that date will slip again into the last quarter of this year.

This stunning piece of architecture sits adjacent to the Giza Pyramid Complex. The high ceilings cover 872,000 square feet/81,000 m2 of floor space. Not all of the space is dedicated to exhibits, however. There’s also plenty of room for seminars and lectures:

Now, let’s look at some of the ancient wonders on display:

Cairo — The Pyramid of Khufu and the Sphinx

Mastaba (tomb) in the foreground; Pyramid of Queen Henutsen behind

Perhaps the most iconic image at the Giza Pyramid Complex (after the Pyramid of Khafre for me) is the Great Sphinx of Giza. From paw to tail this half man/half lion measures 240 feet/73 meters, and it rises 66 feet/20 meters above the ground. So, even though it appears smallish, especially in comparison to the three large pyramids at this site, it is indeed a very large structure:

And it would look even more impressive if Napoleon’s troops hadn’t blasted off its nose with cannon fire. That’s a myth, by the way. Drawings of the Great Sphinx predating Napolean show it was missing long before “Le Petit Caporal” (The Little Corporal) came along in 1798.

No… Napoleon did not cut off its nose to spite its face

Here’s a side of the Great Sphinx one seldom sees:

Now, normally I hate selfies, but our guide offered, so here we are:

Looking back to the west I captured a three-fer — the Pyramid of Khafre, Pyramid of Menkaure, and one of the three Pyramids of the Queens located just south of Menkaure:

And that is where I’ll leave you for today, with these remaining photos:
