Colorful buildings are not the only sights around Honningsvåg. This close to Russia — Murmansk is only 218 miles/351 kilometers to the southeast — makes this entire region a vital radar outpost for NATO, including early warning for the United States and Canada. Not since the Cold War has this need been as evident as it is today, with an indicted war criminal of questionable mental stability repeatedly making nuclear threats as he strives to reconstitute the old boundaries of the former U.S.S.R. Last week I showed you one such radar site near Nordkapphallen, and today I’ll show you the one located directly across the harbor from Honningsvåg:
And remember that avalanche protection above Honningsvåg?
Well, there was another set of even more impressive avalanche guards as we left the harbor and turned initially southeast. This set of guards protecting the road connecting Honningsvåg with nearby Nordvågen:
In this wide-angle shot you can clearly make out both sets of avalanche guards:
Finally, three last images of this beautiful area at the south end of Magerøya Island:
Fun Photo Friday will finish this look at Honningsvåg, and next week we’ll take a look at Ålesund.

Last Wednesday I took you on a foot tour that wraps around the Honningsvåg waterfront. Today we’re going to view the city from the decks of Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas as she prepares to set sail for Ålesund. The approximate location of Jewel at the time these photos were taken is the black five-point star in the top left corner of this map:
Looking southeast from the cruise pier denoted on the map above, you’ll see the following scene:
If you look back to the north however, you’ll get a splendid view of the colorful homes of Honningsvåg:
Now we’re sailing off out of Honningsvåg. If you get this chance, stay out on the decks for some magnificent views of the city and the surrounding countryside. Remember those avalanche guards I showed you in last week’s Fun Photo Friday? Well, here they are high above the northern part of the city, along with a protective stand of trees:
As Jewel turned south, the entire city came within view:
Make sure you zoom in on the Leichtfeuer (Light Beacon) at the mouth of the harbor:
Finally, make sure you swing your camera back toward the northeast to capture a bit of Honningsvåg color:
On Wednesday I’ll continue with the sail-out show.
