Jewel of the Seas — Norway; Honningsvåg to Kamøyvær

Honningsvåg forecast for our 25 June 2022 arrival

Jewel of the Seas arrived into Honningsvåg, Norway, on 25 June 2022. Honningsvåg is the northernmost city in Norway, and it is located in the municipality of Nordkapp (North Cape). From here we had an early start to the day, as Ursula had us booked on yet another tour. This one would take us to several locations on the island of Magerøya, and I’ll be showing you these destinations over this week and the next four weeks beyond. The tour will highlight today’s subject, the village of Kamøyvær, as well as Skarsvåg, Tufjordhøy (also called The Northern Lights Viewing Area), Nordkapphallen (North Cape Visitors Center), Skarsvågrevva scenic viewing point, and wind up with a foot tour of Honningsvåg. And if you want to see the routing we would take on this tour, here it is:

Honningsvåg to North Cape and back

More on the rest of that tour in the upcoming articles in this series. For now, let’s look at the subject of this week’s articles:

The small fishing village of Kamøyvær

As you can see in the photo above, Kamøyvær is a very charming and colorful stop. The village sits along the shores of Kamøyfjorden (Kamøy Fjord). And, yes, the fishing industry was in evidence everywhere we turned:

Everywhere we turned salted cod was hung to dry:

Norwegians call this klippfisk

The Norwegians call dried, salted cod klippfisk, which literally translates to “cliff fish,” as originally the cod was dried on rocks or on the side of cliffs. And if the hanging cod didn’t give you a clue as to this village’s primary industry, then the colorful fleet certainly would:

Indeed, about the only things rivaling the fishing fleet for color are perhaps the structures:

Hopefully, on your trip, the water will be as still as it was for me. If so, you can expect some great reflection shots:

We’ll continue with Kamøyvær on both Wednesday and this week’s Fun Photo Friday before moving on to Tufjordhøyda and Skarsvåg.

Jewel of the Seas — Downtown Tromsø

Storgata Street, Tromsø, Norway (1:13:35 p.m., 24 June 2022)

Today I’m going to try something just a bit different. I’m going to post a series of consecutively taken photographs in Tromsø, Norway, starting on Storgata and heading south. The timestamp is posted to give you an idea on how closely space all these sights are.

Now it’s time to cross over one parallel street to the east. We’re now on Strandgata at the Strandtorget looking north:

Strandtorget appears to be quite the draw for outdoor activity in Tromsø. Here you can play table tennis, chess, or let the little ones frolic on the play equipment:

We’re now continuing northeast on Strandgata, heading toward Kirkegata:

Hitting Kirkegata (Church Street) gets you this view of Tromsø Cathedral:

Time to hang a right and head east on Kirkegata to snap a shot of the Roald Amundsen Memorial Statue:

Not bad. All that in just a mere forty-five minutes of casual strolling. But as we headed back toward the ship, I found one additional fun shot. This is the Kongsbakken Upper Secondary School as seen from below on Fredrik Langes Gate:

This week’s Fun Photo Friday will complete this look at Tromsø. Next week I’ll show you our next June 2022 destination — Honningsvåg.
