Fun Photo Friday — Kauai

In today’s Fun Photo Friday I present some of my favorite shots of Kauai.  Hope you enjoyed the journey, and please read the little exposé at the end.

By the way, if you’re reading this and other material authored by me on The Destinary website, this post was not “Posted on (fill in the date) | By destinary” as they’ve been erroneously claiming; this material was in fact reposted.  The Destinary have also been claiming the right to do so, without links back to the original and without full attribution (“by RDoug” and a nonworking link is not proper attribution) with a rather bizarre interpretation of U.S. copyright law in which they claim I’m responsible for changing my RSS feed settings so that they cannot skim my material for commercial purposes.  That would make reading my blog less convenient for you, which I’m not willing to do.  As such, I’ll be running this little diatribe on all travel related posts until they cease and desist, along with this:

Honolulu and into the Countryside of Oahu

Honolulu and Diamond Head

Honolulu and Diamond Head

Honolulu is famous for many things: Pearl Harbor, Honolulu Harbor, Aloha Tower, Diamond Head, and of course Waikiki Beach.  Aloha Tower is located on Pier 9 in Honolulu Harbor, and it was for some forty years the tallest structure in Hawaii.  What you may not know is that it was originally a lighthouse.

In the distance beyond Waikiki Beach is Diamond Head volcanic crater.

If you’d like to see the view from atop Diamond Head I would suggest you visit this link appropriately titled:  A View from Atop Diamond Head.  That link will take you to a post I did way back in February, 2011, of a hike Ursula and I made to the top.  In that post you’ll see images such as these:

One of the most prominent skyline features in Honolulu is actually two skyline features.  I’m referring to One Waterfront Towers:

On Fun Photo Friday I’ll present some of my favorite shots from this trip to Oahu, and next week we’ll begin our culinary tour of Oahu.

Reaching Oahu after Five Days at Sea

Pier 9 Honolulu Harbor and Aloha Tower

MS Oosterdam departed Pago Pago Harbor on Friday, April 25.  We spent the next five days at sea, crossing the equator on that Sunday and finally sailing into Oahu, Hawaii on Thursday, May 1.

Alas Ursula and I did not spend a whole lot of time in Honolulu as we’ve been here many times in the past,  including our honeymoon over 35 years ago.  At any rate we had another excursion in mind.  We hurriedly left the ship for something we’d never done before — a food tour of the island.

So on this trip we got to see much more than just Honolulu, and we tasted much more than the standard tourist fare.

This week I’ll be presenting photos of Oahu Island sights, but next week I’ll take you on a culinary tour that will end with a special Fun Food Friday rather than the usual Fun Photo Friday.  On that day, a week from this Friday, I’ll present my recipe for one of Hawaii’s most tempting street foods — Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp just as it tastes coming off an island food truck.

But for this week we’ll concentrate on the Oahu scenery.
