Montreal — Part 1

Old Montreal

Old Montreal is a bit like stepping back into time by a century or more . . . much more. There is also a lot of art in this town, both serious and whimsical. In the Place d’Armes you can find a statue of Paul de Chomedey, founder of Montreal, while nearby are a pair of satirical statues titled “English Pug and French Poodle,” which expresses I would think the tension between English-speaking and French-speaking Canada. You’ll see one version of “English Pug” on Fun Photo Friday.

While the building lining the streets may be of another time, the autos traveling them can be quite modern.

City Hall is also located in the old section of town. This impressive structure took six years to build beginning in 1872.

Notre-Dame Basilica Montreal — Part 2

Unfortunately not even as magnificent a structure as this is immune from vandalism. In 1978 the Chapelle du Sacré-Cœur (Chapel of the Sacred Heart) was destroyed by arson. Luckily, the main structure was spared. But tragedy often brings opportunity, and the chapel was rebuilt in a mixture of old and new.
