Santiago — Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago Part 1
On the west side of Plaza de Armas (Santiago’s main square), near the northwest corner, is the Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago (Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago). It’s a magnificent neo-classical design that was completed in 1800 — a 62-year project. Unfortunately, the catherdral, most notably the north tower, was undergoing restoration and had scaffolding marring it’s exterior. But that interior!
Absolutely stunning, and very reminiscent of the best European examples. Here is a statue of the Archangel Michael:
Also holding a place of reverent honor within the walls of the Metropolitan Cathedral is a statue dedicated to Chile’s second saint, Saint Alberto Hurtado:
