Continuing Along the La Paz Boardwalk

The city of La Paz is a real charmer with much to see and photograph.  Even the shoreline has a character all its own.

I hinted on Monday that you would see a gigantic oyster shell and pearl.  This is just one of the many pieces of art that decorate the boardwalk.

Across the street from the boardwalk you’ll find brightly painted buildings.  Here is a restaurant that was still decorated for Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, which I described to you recently in my series on our stop this cruise into San Diego’s Old Town.

Across the street is also a good vantage point from which to photograph the boardwalk.

As we headed away from the bay and into town, Ursula and I also found some interesting mural work.

Arriving La Paz, Baja

Very Welcome to La Paz (Peace), Port of Illusion

Very Welcome to La Paz (Peace), Port of Illusion

On Monday, November 3, the Golden Princess arrived off La Paz, Baja California Sur, in the Sea of Cortez.  This is not a common cruise ship destination, and neither Ursula nor I had ever been here before so we were quite looking forward to visiting La Paz.  We were not disappointed.

Bay of La Paz

Unlike all the other Mexican ports we would visit this cruise, La Paz is not a tender port.  You dock just off the city’s boardwalk, which runs along the bay.

The boardwalk itself is quite charming.  It is decorated with many works of art and even a giant oyster shell with a glistening stainless steel pearl (which you’ll see Wednesday).

The boardwalk also has a distinctive faux lighthouse for an added nautical flair befitting a sea port.

And how often do you see a two-story gazebo?

Fun Photo Friday — Danza de los Voladores

One Ritual, Two Names — Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Flyers) or Palo Volador (Pole Flying)

One Ritual, Two Names — Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Flyers) or Palo Volador (Pole Flying)

There is a ritual originating from the deep, central regions of Mexico known as Pole Flying (Palo Volador) or the Dance of the Flyers (Danza de los Voladores).  Today it’s more associated with the Totonac people along the eastern coastal Veracruz region of Mexico.

One Ritual, Two Names — Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Flyers) or Palo Volador (Pole Flying)

But you won’t catch me doing it.  Pole Flying entails climbing up an unbraced, 100-foot/30-meter pole along with four other individuals.  You and three of your fellow climbers then bind your feet together with the ends of segments of rope tightly wrapped around the top of the pole.  The four of you then fall backwards while the fifth person rides atop the now spinning platform atop the pole while you slowly (hopefully) descend while rotating toward Earth.

So, what has a ritual from Veracruz have to do with a peninsula off the west coast of Mexico?  It turns out that the Totonac like to show off in many places in Mexico, and on this day we were fortunate enough to see a troupe perform upon our arrival into Cabo San Lucas.

One last shot for today’s Fun Photo Friday.  This one is of the Buccaneer Queen.  We didn’t go on her, but she looks to be a lot of fun.  Check out the video (not taken by me) at the end to see what I mean.  And while you’re at it, note how fast she goes even with the sails furled!  (just kidding; I know she’s motorized)
