Fun Photo Friday — Christmas Lights 2013

Well, it’s time for the annual Christmas Lights blog.  This year El Paso’s San Jacinto Plaza is undergoing renovation, so the annual downtown light display was moved to the park just outside the main city library, and is comparatively subdued over years past.

Nevertheless, the display is still impressive.

Visitors came to gawk.  If they took chill there was hot chocolate nearby.

And if they got hungry there was the snack wagon.

But for atmosphere it’s just hard to resist converting nighttime people shots to black and white.

Christmas lights however are made to display in full color.

Most of the shots taken for today’s blog were at ISO 400 to keep digital noise to a minimum.  Aperture Priority was used with aperture set to the widest possible opening.  The camera was stabilized on a carbon fiber tripod (a real must if you’re serious about photography — light, quick to set up, easy to move).  Shutter release was delayed for two seconds to avoid camera shake, and most exposures were taken at about one full second.  Some shots were taken using Hand Held Night Scene mode, in which the camera takes a series of three shots in rapid succession and then internally combines the shots into one image.  The snack wagon shot above was taken using this latter method.

For more tips (especially color balance) see my blog post from December 21, 2012:  Photographing Outdoor (and Indoor) Christmas Lights

Fun Photo Friday — Random Blog Headings

If you’ve logged onto my blog the past week you may have noticed a subtle change near the top of the pages.  Gone from the header is that long-familiar (and probably stale by now) book motif.  In its place you’ll now notice a randomly revolving set of cropped shots.  I hope you enjoy the rotating change in scenery, and you can expect more scenes to be added in the future.

Here are the photographs I currently have selected for blog header duty (Hint: Refreshing the blog page will randomly load  a header):

Barcelona (41)

Christopher Columbus Pointing the Way

I don’t speak a lot of Spanish (taco, enchilada, chile relleno, and perhaps most importantly, cerveza), but I do know pretty much how to pronounce things . . . except apparently in Barcelona.  Here, the “s” is pronounced as a “th” sound, resulting in some potentially harrowing situations.

For instance, I was practicing this rather unique Barcelona-ism in case I had to say something in the local Spanish (Catalon is the predominant language here, but good luck getting me to try that) when I noticed Ursula was about to make a major misstep.

I hurredly said, “Wath out.  Dog thit.”

By the time she asked, “What?” it was far too late.

Ursula and I had been to Barcelona twice previous to this occasion, so I didn’t really take many photographs this time of the city.  Rather, I was eagerly waiting for something we hadn’t done before — the interior of Antoni Gaudí’s incredible Sagrada Familia.  That will be the subject of an upcoming three-part series with Parts 2 and 3 focusing on the unbelievable interior.

Meanwhile, below is today’s slideshow of Barcelona.  Watch for the Arc de Triomf, the Torre Agbar Tower, the bustling and crowded Las Rambla pedestrian mall, a very interesting guard house, and other sights of Barcelona:
