Singapore in Pictures 6 — Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery & Changi Chapel

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery rooftop

The Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery is a huge complex containing many buildings. Construction on this traditional Chinese Buddhist monastery in Bishan began in 1920. SInce that time it has expanded, adding various temples, a nunnery, and in 2006 the Buddhist College of Singapore.

Now let us move on to a more somber and sorrowful point in Singapore history. Changi Chapel and Museum is built near the site of the infamous Changi Prisoner Camp (today the site of Changi Prison) run by the Imperial Army of Japan during Japan’s occupation of Singapore during World War II.

Changi Chapel & Museum

The chapel you see below is a replica of one of the many built by prisoners in the Changi camp. This replica was built in 1988, and relocated to this site in 2001.

I hope you enjoyed today’s tour. We’ll continue with Singapore next week.
