Three Rivers Petroglyphs — Part 1
Following lunch at the charming La Luz restaurant Nuckleweed Place, we continued on our day trip destination — The Three Rivers Petroglyph Site.
The Three Rivers Petroglyphs are located some seventeen miles north of Tularosa, New Mexico, in the shadow of the Sierra Blanca Mountains and impressive Sierra Blanca Peak at 11,981 feet (3,652 meters) above sea level.
At Three Rivers you’ll find an extraordinary display of early Jornado Mogollon rock art — over 21,000 pieces scattered about the area. The Mogollon predated the Mescalero Apache in this area by several hundred years.
A short hike from the main petroglyph site takes you to excavations of an early Mogollon settlement.
Continuing east of Three Rivers for about four miles will bring you to the small Niño de Atocha Church.
