Why Did I Join?: Understanding Oneself After Combat

Everyone that I have talked to in the Marine Corps about why they joined had a ton of different reasons. Some did it because it was custom in the family. Others joined to get out of trouble and start a new life. And some just joined to get away from what was ordinary and to tell the rest of the world to pound sand.
Being as I lost my independence on Independence Day, I would normally devote today's blog to my lovely wife of 33 years and the time we have spent together. Alas, something else came up, and the 4th of July seems a singularly appropriate time to post this. This blog is also a rarity in that I'm engaging in "reblogging" someone else's material—something I'm loathe to do as I pride myself on staying original in content. Nevertheless, I find this man's story compelling and his mission in life important. But, be forewarned that the language may be a bit rough.
